Quick Guide: Consumer and Professional Digital Recorders

In the digital voice recorder market there are basically two categories, Consumer and Professional.  What are the differences? Take a look at our quick guide for distinctions between the two.

Memory / Storage -- Record Time & Record Quality

1) Consumer Digital Recorders typically have built in memory limiting storage (record time) to a fixed amount.

2) Professional Digital Recorders typically utilize removable media and allow for greater storage through larger memory cards.  Removable media offers greater flexibility in other areas as well. For example if you need to have a file transcribed or downloaded to the pc you simply turn in the media card not the recorder.  In addition, many of the professional digital recorders released in the last year have HQ/High Quality or ST/Stereo record modes which offer better record quality.

PC Connectivity

1) Consumer Digital Recorders do not always offer pc connectivity.

2) Professional Digital Recorders always offer pc connectivity and "player/editor" software. The "player/editor" software allows you to play, edit, save, and convert files on the pc. Files can be downloaded via card reader, USB cable, or a docking station.

Features

1) Consumer Digital Recorders are typically very easy to use but are limited in features. They are primarily meant to record and play memos.

2) Professional Digital Recorders are designed to meet the more rigorous needs of Professional users. Professional features include ability to assign an Author ID and Work Type, insert audio into an existing recording, and write protect a recording.
