DSS or Digital Speech Standard was jointly developed by Grundig, Olympus and Philips almost 10 years ago to address the need for a digital speech recording standard that would enable high quality audio (voice) recording at a high Compression rate.
Digital Speech Standard benefits:
- Drastically reduces the file size and transfer volume for speech recordings.
- Provides extensive extra features for processing digital speech recordings
- Ideal for Professional transcription enviroment, specifically designed for efficient processing in complex workflow / work processes.
- Standardised and future-proof storage format for speech files.
- Ability to store additional information in the .dss header file
The .DSS format is maintained as a manufacturer-independent and international standard for professional speech processing by the International Voice Association (IVA).

I have a question I can't find the answer to. Can audio files recorded in the .dss format be converted to .wav format?
Answer
Yes. Most of the download programs packaged with the recorders offer the conversion tool.
