DSS or Digital Speech Standard was jointly developed by Grundig, Olympus and Philips almost 10 years ago to address the need for a digital speech recording standard that would enable high quality audio (voice) recording at a high compression rate.

The .dss format is maintained as a manufacturer-independent and international standard for professional speech processing by the International Voice Association (IVA).
