- Published 11/10/2008
BURLINGTON, Mass. May 15, 2008 — Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions, today announced that the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), the largest social service agency in Florida, has selected Nuance’s Dragon® NaturallySpeaking® software, the world’s most accurate and best-selling speech recognition application, to speed the process of creating field case reports throughout the agency. The Florida DCF will roll out Dragon Professional Edition configured specifically to support the field reporting needs of the department. When the rollout is complete, more than 1,600 employees will be able to quickly and accurately complete comprehensive field reports — entirely by voice.
Today’s tough economic climate has led social service agencies such as the Florida DCF to find innovative ways to boost efficiencies within their organizations so that they can keep pace with ever-increasing case loads. The Nuance-designed solution brings together the best-selling Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional software with leading digital voice recorders to deliver the ultimate in mobile reporting tools for field agents.
For years, employees at the Florida DCF have taken a traditional approach to reporting: agents met with clients and took detailed, hand-written notes summarizing their meetings and findings. These hand-written notes were then typed into final reports and filed. This was a time-consuming process that often kept agents mired in paperwork, and even limited the amount of time agents could spend actually interacting with their clients. Today, using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Florida DCF agents simply dictate their notes and findings into a digital voice recorder while they are still in the field, and their notes are automatically transcribed into final reports when they return to the their office and connect to their PC. This new approach with Dragon empowers Florida DCF employees in the field to quickly and accurately complete all of their reports entirely by voice, and stands to increase productivity by three times over manual typing.
“As our case loads increase and budgets have tightened for social service organizations throughout the state, we’ve worked to leverage new technologies such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking to increase efficiencies and manage workflows,” said acting chief information officer at the Florida Department of Children and Families, Chris Pantaleon. “Using Dragon, our field staff will reclaim upwards of two hours each day – time previously spent in the office typing notes – and reallocate that time to more frequent, and longer, visits with clients. Being able to spend more time in the field — and less time in the office — helps us deliver the highest levels of service to our clients.”
The Florida DCF joins other large organizations such as the FBI, the U.S. Attorneys Office and the U.S. Social Security Administration who have also benefited from Dragon software and from Nuance’s simple enterprise license programs. In all cases, Dragon NaturallySpeaking software can deliver productivity increases of up to 300 percent and allow for more detailed reporting by automating the manual document creation and editing process that has traditionally bound many organizations. People can dictate and edit interview notes, reports, emails and other documents all by voice, at up to 160 words per minute — more than three times faster than typing — and at accuracy levels up to 99 percent. In addition, users can create voice shortcuts to insert blocks of texts or bitmaps — such as client name, contact information and case number — with a single voice command, or macros to streamline repetitive workflows, saving even more time and increasing productivity.
“The selection of Dragon NaturallySpeaking by the Florida DCF is proof positive that speech recognition is an invaluable productivity tool for anyone creating documents or reports,” said Peter Mahoney, vice president and general manager, Desktop Dictation Business Unit of Nuance. “Not only does Dragon make it faster for agencies such as the DCF to create and file reports, but it makes the reports themselves more comprehensive due to the ease with which additional detail can be added.”

Three winning entries were selected by a panel of judges from the hundreds of exceptional stories received in three categories, and Nuance is pleased to announce the following winners:
I Speak Dragon to Improve My Creativity
William Brotherton never learned to type; he simply didn’t need to as a brakeman and conductor riding locomotives and cabooses for the Burlington Northern Railroad. Two decades later, as he began a career in law, Brotherton started to see how his inability to type would limit what he would be able to do. Determined not to let his lack of finesse with a keyboard hinder his professional status, Brotherton purchased the very first version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking in 1997 and has been loyal to the software ever since. By using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Brotherton has been able to write stories, articles — and even a book entitled “Burlington Northern Adventures: Railroading in the Days of the Caboose” — about his time on the railroad. He is able to express himself creatively without ever using his hands, something that would be impossible without his Dragon software.
Brotherton’s story is one that represents a large number of people who are either not able or choose not to type, and who would be seriously limited in terms of what they could do creatively if not for the freedom of dictation that Dragon NaturallySpeaking provides. He attributes his success as an author to Dragon: “Thanks Dragon NaturallySpeaking for allowing me to do so much, even though I refused to learn how to type!”
I Speak Dragon to Improve My Life
While serving in Iraq, Chuck Ziegenfuss chronicled his thoughts and experiences in a blog. He gained a readership that appreciated the details and openness in which he told his insightful stories with self-deprecating humor. In June of 2005, Ziegenfuss was wounded by an IED while serving as commander of a tank company. During the recovery from his injury, his wife continued blogging for him. Soon he wanted to get back to authoring the blog himself, but his typing was impaired due to the damage done to his hands by the IED.
A loyal reader of the blog bought Ziegenfuss a copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking to allow him to freely dictate his thoughts without relying on others. Once he started using Dragon to blog, Ziegenfuss’ readers agreed that this technology should be available to other soldiers who were in the same situation that he was. Ziegenfuss partnered with SoldiersAngels to form VALOUR-IT (Voice Activated Laptops for OUR Injured Troops) with a vision to provide laptops equipped with Dragon NaturallySpeaking to wounded soldiers whose injuries prevented them from operating a computer manually.
“I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to regain control of the life that was temporarily robbed from me, and to bring that same sense of empowerment to other soldiers just like me,” said Ziegenfuss. “The use of Dragon NaturallySpeaking to use a computer, to connect, to do something that I was able to do before I was injured made me feel somewhat whole, somewhat normal, for the first time. It has been my distinct pleasure and honor to give that feeling, a feeling of ability, to our wounded. Dragon has not only improved my life, it has changed my life.”
I Speak Dragon to Improve My Work
Doug Edwards is a property inspector for residential and light commercial inspections, as well as a licensed public adjuster. His job requires that he go to numerous sites on a given day to perform inspections, each of which can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days. After a long day in the field, Edwards has to create extensive, often complicated, reports of his findings.
When Edwards found Dragon NaturallySpeaking, the way that he approached reporting fundamentally changed. “It takes me about one tenth of the time to generate an extremely clean, accurate report. It is virtually like dictating my field notes and checklist items to a stenographer,” said Edwards. “Dragon has saved me untold hours of typing thousands of important details into a fine finished product. I can almost always generate a polished report that can be emailed out in less than 24 hours from the end of the actual inspection. For that, our customers are very happy and impressed.”
The above winners will each receive a Garmin Nuvi 360 Personal Travel Assistant as well as Dragon NaturallySpeaking upgrades for three years.

- Published 11/10/2008
BURLINGTON, Mass., August 7, 2008 — Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading provider of speech solutions, today unveiled Nuance’s Dragon® NaturallySpeaking® 10 software, a breakthrough new release of the world’s best-selling speech recognition software. With Dragon, people can write documents and emails, search the Web, and even control their PC entirely by voice, saving time and boosting productivity. Because most people speak at least three times faster than they type, Dragon makes it possible to get things done more quickly by voice than by relying on keyboards and mice alone. Dragon 10 is nearly twice as fast as the previous release and can deliver accuracy up to 99 percent, while never making a spelling mistake.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking software from Nuance is used by millions of people — in the office, at home, at school, on the road, even in the operating room — to get more done faster by voice. The new release of Dragon delivers what matters most in speech recognition – superior levels of accuracy, seamless integration with the most popular PC applications, and unrivalled ease of use — and introduces new features that promise to help anyone get more done, faster:
- Get it right the first time — For more than a year, Nuance has hosted a typing test on its Web site to highlight the boost in speed and accuracy that is delivered by Dragon (try it yourself at http://www.nuance.com/talk). After testing 35,000 people, Nuance found that the average typing speed was 35 words per minute (WPM), down from previous estimates of 40 WPM. Even more significant, the data showed that the average accuracy was only 58 percent. Dragon’s near-perfect accuracy means less time spent pecking away at the keyboard and more time actually getting things done — at speeds of up to 160 WPM. Significant improvements to the Dragon NaturallySpeaking recognition system have yielded an accuracy improvement of more than 20 percent over the previous release, resulting in speech recognition accuracy levels as high as 99 percent. In fact, the product actually learns from corrections over time, making speech a more natural and satisfying experience. And, perhaps best of all, Dragon will never misspell a word.
- Dragon Voice Shortcuts — New Dragon Voice
Shortcuts collapse common multi-step tasks into direct voice commands.
Now you can send emails and schedule meetings, search the Web for
information, products, news and more, or search your desktop faster than ever by saying what you want. For example:
- “Send email to Peter Mahoney and Steve Chambers,” — Dragon opens the user’s email program, creates a new email and puts the appropriate contact names into the “to:” box.
- “Search maps for Italian restaurants in Boston, Massachusetts,” or “Search the Web for Madonna concert schedule,” — Dragon opens the default search engine and Web browser to enter the spoken words in the search field and return the results. Users can also search specific sites by voice including Google, Yahoo, eBay, Wikipedia and YouTube.
- Quick Voice Formatting — Quick Voice Formatting commands allow users to issue a single voice command, such as “Bold Quick Voice Formatting,” to make formatting text faster than ever. In addition, an extensive set of natural language commands means users don’t have to memorize complex instructions. In Microsoft Word, for example, a user can say ‘make that bigger,’ and the font size increases instantly.
- Type as fast as you talk — With Dragon, spoken words appear on the screen almost instantly, making speech a faster, more natural approach to connect with your PC. Most people speak about 120 words per minute, but type fewer than 40 words a minute. Dragon NaturallySpeaking lets users create documents and emails about three times faster than typing.
- Cut the cord from the PC — For the first time ever, Nuance is offering a special Dragon NaturallySpeaking edition bundled with a Bluetooth headset to deliver a truly hands-free, untethered experience. With the accompanying Plantronics Calisto Bluetooth headset in certain bundles, people can move up to 30 feet away from their computer while dictating. In addition, because Dragon works with many digital voice recorders and personal digital assistants (PDAs), people can get more done while they are on the go, reclaiming lost time.
- Talk to your favorite applications — Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 lets people speak their minds quickly with today’s most popular applications, including Microsoft Word and Outlook, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and popular instant message clients such as AOL Instant Messenger.
Changing Lives, One Voice at a Time
Dragon NaturallySpeaking gives people an easy way to get more done in less time — whether it is sending an email, writing a report, capturing an old family recipe or updating a blog. The best way to appreciate the power and flexibility of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 is to see how people in all walks of life are putting the software to work to make it easier for them to speak their minds.
- John Ungerleider, a graduate school professor, uses Dragon to provide more comprehensive feedback on student papers
- Nicholas Harding, an environmental lawyer, uses Dragon to dictate all of his correspondence and other written material in order to increase his productivity and free time for his assistant to focus on “smarter” tasks
- Rob Wirthland, a PhD student, used Dragon to dictate (and ace) all of his final exams
“Speech technology has reached a critical turning point where it is now fundamentally changing the way that we interact with the world around us,” said Steve Chambers, president of the Mobile and Consumer division of Nuance. “What was once a ‘Star Trek’ dream is now a reality — on our mobile phones, in our cars, on our navigation devices, and now on the desktop with Dragon. With its near-perfect accuracy and easy-to-use interface, Dragon has touched millions of people by creating a more productive and natural experience at the desktop. There’s no need to take time to train the software or learn arcane steps or commands anymore – people can simply start talking and see their ideas flow directly onto the page. It really is incredible to see.”
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 is also Section 508 certified to allow hands-free use of the PC for those with disabilities and to assist people with carpal tunnel syndrome or other repetitive stress injuries. Dragon NaturallySpeaking has been shown to reduce temporary labor costs and insurance premiums by reducing repetitive stress injuries and worker compensation claims.
The latest release of Dragon NaturallySpeaking comes from the world’s expert in speech recognition — Nuance. Nuance speech technology touches millions of people every day as they interact with their bank or airline reservation system by voice, dial by voice from their cell phone, or interact with their car’s navigation system.
